The Johnson STEAM Academy Magnet School introduced its new logo this week.
It shows an abstract hand which Cassidy Reinken, the magnet coordinator of the school, said symbolizes the hands-on learning philosophy the school aims to make its hallmark.
The kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school, located at 355 18th Street SE, is making the transition from Johnson Elementary School of the Arts to a magnet school focused on STEAM: science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Reinken said that kind of focus can help students grasp the bigger picture.
“When students learn in this type of way, where they’re learning cross-curricular connections and seeing really how they’re learning is connected to the community, they can make connections to their future,” Reinken said.
The school will still maintain the same standards and core curriculum as other schools in the district.
Renovations are underway at Johnson Elementary this summer to prepare for its transition. The Johnson STEAM Academy will start classes on August 24.
