What's happening
at Johnson?

There is always something new and exciting
happening at Johnson Elementary School of
the Arts – affectionately called JSA. Take a look,
check back often …
JSA is an amazing place to be!

Third Grade Play

Students in Ms. Lawler's class dazzled audiences in two performances Friday afternoon. Students worked with JSA Artist-in-Residence, Mr. Ben, to develop a script and rehearsed for several weeks before presenting their hard work to students and families Friday afternoon. Congratulations to all! Your hard work — despite those three snow days! — paid off!

Family Reading Night - a rousing success!

Reading Night at Johnson was attended by 150 students and their families. Students received free JSA Bookstore certificates as they came in the building on December 15th. 61 Johnson students received certificates. Students and their parents were welcomed by Ms. Marshall. Fourth and fifth graders and their families met in the IMC. These students were shown fluency activities and participated in a compare/contrast lesson to improve reading comprehension. First, second, and third graders and their families were in the gallery for their reading program. Primary families also learned how they could help improve their children’s comprehension as they read. Making connections from what they read to their own lives, to the world around them, and to other books increases their understanding.

A read aloud was demonstrated to the group. This activity included talking points on how to make these important connections. Families received packets with examples of questions they could use with their children before, during, and after their reading at home.

Students and their families were able to share a spaghetti dinner with one another in the cafeteria following the presentations. The Orff ensemble provided wonderful music during the meal.

Everyone at Johnson was excited by the wonderful turn out of people and the excitement they shared about helping their children to read at home.

Loco LEGOS Rock!

The JSA “Loco LEGOS” squad represented our school extremely well at the Regional Qualifier tournament for First LEGO League. The Loco LEGOS received high marks for their teamwork and for their computer programming design. Our robot ran the course on the LEGO Field three times, and finished in the top 1/3 of all 54 schools that competed. All teams made a presentation to a panel about this year’s topic, which was transportation. The JSA students focused on solving problems that students in the neighborhood have in getting to school safely. For the first time in our five year history, the team won an award for their presentation. The award, an honorable mention, was entitled, “Innovative Solution.” The JSA “Loco LEGOS” are: Chris McCright, Caleb Klemen, Jordan Smith, O’rien Vance, Junior Vazquez, Austin Wake, Mark Ferring, Seth Clark, Jonathan Barr and Max Campbell. The team was coached by Mr. Adrian and Ms. Griffin, and assisted by Mr. Hebrink.

Thank you, PTA!!

Johnson Elementary School of the Arts has earned national recognition this fall for their before- and after-school enrichment program. A $1,000 grant award from the National PTA’s Mary Lou Anderson Reflection Arts Enhancement Grant Program was presented to the Johnson PTA at their November meeting. The objective of the grant program is to enhance arts education in the classroom or other learning environments. The winners of the grants were chosen based on the creativity of the program and the ability to reach at-risk students. The Johnson AHA! (Arts Heighten Achievement) currently has 105 JSA students attending 22 different enrichment classes. The offerings cover a range of arts. On any given day you may find students at dance, singing, painting, sculpting, or playing instruments. Classes in photography, drama, and television production are very popular. In addition to the fine arts, students learn chess, design and program robots, and learn about other cultures.

New look for report cards…

Elementary Progress Report
The Cedar Rapids Community School District is implementing the use of a new standards-based progress report for all kindergarten through fifth grade students. This video identifies why the progress report is different than in the past and how progress will be reported to parents at parent-teacher conferences and the end of the school year for each elementary age student.
